The CounterBalance Shoe is an orthopedic, technology based shoe that centers your balance
while maintaining treatment of arthritis therefore preventing falls. This project started in
the fall of 2012 to research the history and opportunity to advance the type and availability of
treatment available to those with multiple symptoms.
Why the CounterBalance Shoe?
Arthritis causes weakness in the extremities, poor grip strength,
balance disorders, and cognitive impairment which leads to falling.
One out of three adults age 65 fall each year.
The falls of elderly are the leading cause of injury or death of the elderly.
Arthritis affects 40 million people at a cost of 65 billion dollars annually.
53% of the elderly that are discharged from hip surgery will fall again in 6 months.
