One of the most promising researches is the use of neural nets to model the behavior of the brain. Neuronal nets are systems of microchips that model the basic neurons in the brain. At the present time they can only carry out small specialized tasks. Our diagram above shows the basic layout of a neural net.

Other research being done includes the study of plasticity which is a way the brain tries to repair itself after damage. For our technology we looked at neurogenesis, which is a type of plasticity in which new neurons are born to replace damaged ones. However today neurogensis can only helps patients recover from the effect of a minor brain damage.

Another aspect of present technology  we researched when creating our future technology is the use of biological microeletromechanical devices (bioMEMS) to fight diseases. Scientists have used these small microchips in treating heart diseases and diabetes. Dr. Michler, chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Ohio State, envisions that in the future these disease-fighting microchips will be placed at different points in the body such as the heart and blood vessels. The chips would contain stem cells that would that would replicate rapidly to create a constant supply of a particular type of cell. This way those cells that get damaged through disease and injury can be quickly replaced.
