The neuron is the basic cellular unit of the brain. There are over 100 billion neurons in the brain. The dendrites receive information in the form of electric impulses. Axons, on the other hand, send on impulses to other neurons throughout the nervous system.

Isaac Newton (1660) suggested that nerves transmitted vibrations through extremely fine ether inside the nerves.

A microchip is a small piece of semi-conducting material containing many electronic circuits. The first microchip was the Intel 4004. This chip was created in 1971 by Intel Corporation and was originally designed to be the processor of calculators and watches. Its simple design was the basis for modern microchips.

The first operational neural network was constructed in 1962, and was first theorized mathematically by Frank Rosenblatt. It was deemed “The Perceptron.”

Marvin Minsky is Toshiba Professor of Media Arts and Sciences. His research has led to advances in both artificial intelligence and  neural networks.
