History

Evolution of eyeglasses over time

The concept of aids for sight originated from the Venetians.  They created a reading stone in the 1000s that when laid upon an object, it would magnify the object.

The idea of wearing glasses came about in the 14th century.  In the 17th century, Spanish glasses makers invented the idea of ribbons of silk that could be wrapped around the ears.  They brought this idea to China, where the Chinese created an innovation with sturdy materials that would rest on the ear, like metal.  By the time 18th century emerged, only the rich owned glasses.  Glasses were originally so exorbitant because the lens were made of glass, which is known for its optical clarity.

The technology has not changed much in recent history.  Laser eye surgery was to be a breakthrough, but has more side effects than originally anticipated by the FDA.  Other innovations have been largely cosmetic.
