Since the beginning of the Afghan War in 2001, about 180,000 service members have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injury. It is thought that close to 320,000 soldiers may actually be affected by moderate to severe brain injuries. Unfortunately, these soldiers are less likely to completely recover from their injuries; the more severe the brain trauma, the more permanent the effects of the damage.

The total cost of treating and caring for returning U.S. combat soldiers, who have suffered moderate to traumatic brain injury, is almost $1 billion a year.
