Most recently, Acoustic Flow Monitor (AFMs) were invented in early 1990s by American Richard G. LaHusen. These geophones "listen" for lahar flow signals. They measure the amplitude, the frequency and the duration of ground motion.  AFMs have helped with early detection of lahars. However, detection systems are not enough. Advanced evacuation methods must also be developed.
