Today there aren’t many proven methods to test onset of dehydration. Hydration condition is indicated by body weight, urine specific gravity, blood plasma levels, and bioelectrical impedance. Doctors look for sunken eyes, low blood pressure, rapid heart rate and poor skin turgor when trying to diagnose dehydration. Experimental development are ongoing, as shown below:

  • assessing radial pulse before and after a supine to standing transition

  • ultra-compact blood flow sensor

  • bio sensor that can measure the osmolality or concentration of saliva.
