Aerogel |
|
Aerogel was created by Steven Kistler, of
Stockton, California, in 1931, but was mostly ignored until the 1960s and
1970s.
Aerogel weighs as little as three times that of air, and can be transparent. An inch thickness of this silica-based material has the internal surface area of a basketball court. |
|
Different varieties exist, with slightly different colors and strengths. The open pore network of silica aerogels allows easy transport of vapors
throughout the entire material. Virtually any compound with a slight vapor
pressure can be deposited throughout a silica aerogel.
Over 800 products are made from Aerogel, ranging from satellites and
surfboards to clothing.
Aerogel is Face Brace's super material structure. |
