  Food Allergen Detector

Our Solution

The Food Allergen Detector (FAD), a small hand-held apparatus, would use Raman spectroscopy, a method that requires focusing a UV laser beam on a food sample and detecting the scattered light.

The FAD would have a database of the unique Raman spectrums of 50 common allergens to help identify and provide information on the presence of one or more of them in a food sample. The results would be displayed on a touch screen, which users would read to decide if the food presented before them could be consumed safely.

  • Dimensions- 5’’ tall, 2’’ wide, and 0.5’’ thick.

  • The test button is pressed to begin the process.

  • An invisible UV laser light shoots out, but to ensure safety, there is a green laser that is also emitted in the same directions as the UV laser to measure the distance of the sample from the device.

  • The F.A.D.  must less than 2 cm away from the sample.

  • The device can detect an allergen at a concentration of 5 ppm (parts-per-million)

  • The F.A.D. then displays its analysis on the touch screen, indicating a positive or negative for each of the 50 allergens.

Consequences

  • The millions who suffer from food allergies will now no longer have to strictly control their sources of food, but can instead use the F.A.D. to check any food sample for allergens prior to consumption.

  • The F.A.D. may encounter a food item not on its database or offer a false negative.

  • Food items consisting of heterogeneous elements such as salad will need to be tested multiple times or users may have to create a mixture on the sides.

Before you eat,

A food or sweet,

Check the F.A.D,

For any allergy!
