A BIT OF HISTORY
"Thy fish will make thee plants
grow strong. Thy willl have many
vegetables to share with thee."
A LONG TIME AGO

A long time ago Native Americans taught
the Pilgrims how to plant corn, beans, and
squash. Squanto showed the Pilgrims
how to fish. He also showed them how
fish would help vegetables grow. Pilgrim
children may not have liked the
vegetables they grew, but it was all they
had to eat.
When Johnny Appleseed
was alive people had to
grow most of their own
food. They had small
gardens next to their
cabins. Rabbits and deer
came to eat the
vegetables. It was the
children's job to chase the
animals away.
Vegetables are now grown on big
farms. The farmers grow food for
millions of people. Most people
buy vegetables at the grocery
store. There are many kinds of
vegetables to choose when we go
shopping.
"I don't understand why no one
wants to eat boiled cabbage!"
"I wish the vegetables we planted
tasted better."
"Off to work I go."
